Review Happy Head (the company)

Happy Head is a hair loss subscription, and telemedicine company focused solely on delivering compounded hair loss treatments right to your door. The company was created in 2021 by Dr. Sean Behnam and Dr. Ben Behnam, two brothers with a passion for hair restoration and a deep understanding of hair growth medicines.

Happy Head stands out because its treatment formulas can be fully customized. The company’s CEO, Ben Katz, said, “Hair loss is a huge problem, psychologically damaging, and can cause intense emotional suffering – impacting 85% of men and 50% of women. Products in the market today are one-size-fits-all, inconvenient to buy, and can come with severe side effects.”

Reviews on the Cost of Happy Head

New clients can purchase this hair loss treatment for 50-60% off on their first order, Happy Head is that confident that you’ll be a repeat customer because they’re product works!

After month one, Happy Head’s subscription costs $79 per month with free shipping. There are no locked in contracts, so you can cancel any time.

Happy Head reviews often mention customers experiencing regrowing their hair within 3-6 months in many cases.

What Science says about Happy Head Hair Loss Treatments

Backed by clinical studies, Happy Head’s topical hair loss treatment has demonstrated remarkable efficacy.

In a trial involving a Happy Head solution combined with 1% topical Spironolactone and 5% Minoxidil gel, 100% of participants, including both men and women, all reported experiencing clinical improvements. 40% of them said excellent responses, while 50% noted good responses, with only 10% indicating a fair response.

Happy Head BBB Reviews

Happy Head, Inc. maintains BBB accreditation with a B+ rating and fewer than 10 complaints in the last three years, indicative of an excellent track record.

It’s worth noting that the BBB rating isn’t an A+ primarily due to the relatively short duration of Happy Head’s presence in the market, being in business for less than five years.

Reviews on Happy Head for Woman

In addition to its clinical success and customer satisfaction, Happy Head offers specialized products tailored to women and a range of hair health supplements and hair-thickening shampoo/conditioner.

The unique ingredients and strengths in Happy Head’s product lineup set it apart as a leader in quality and variety, albeit at price points that reflect its premium offerings.

Hims vs Keeps vs Happy Head Reviews on Reddit

Customers of leading products and services often turn to Reddit. “Hims vs Keeps vs Happy Head – Topical Fin comparison”, is the topic of a recent discussion on Reddit. These are your purest form of unbiassed reviews, customers talking openly and freely about the leading and best hair loss treatments.

Well, what are the saying?

The Reddit discussion provides some valuable insights into the comparisons between Hims, Keeps, and Happy Head for topical finasteride and minoxidil treatments.

Summary of Reddit Reviews on Happy Head vs. Hims vs. Keeps

  • Hims offers a combination of 0.3% Finasteride and 6% Minoxidil for $50 per month. This is the highest concentration of Finasteride among the three options.
  • Keeps provides a topical solution with 0.25% Finasteride and 5% Minoxidil at $60 per month, with a discounted rate of $30 per month for the first three months.
  • Happy Head offers a topical solution with 0.25% Finasteride and 5% Minoxidil for $70 per month, with an initial month priced at $0-$35.
  • You can personalize hair loss treatments: Several Reddit Happy Head reviews mention they prefer Happy Head because it allows for customization, and you can request a lower concentration of Finasteride, such as 0.025%, which might be closer to the concentration used in clinical studies.
  • DIY hair loss treatments: There is a discussion about making your own topical DIY Finasteride solution using generic pills, alcohol, propylene glycol, and distilled water. This approach can be cost-effective and allows for customization.
  • Oral vs. Topical hair loss treatments: Reddit users share their experiences with switching from oral Finasteride to topical solutions. Some report fewer side effects with topicals, while others have no issues with oral Finasteride.
  • Scale DHT levels: There are mentions of studies indicating that topical Finasteride can be effective in reducing scalp DHT levels, potentially with fewer systemic side effects.
  • Side Effects: Reddit users also discuss the concentration of Finasteride in the solutions, with users suggesting that lower concentrations may be effective while potentially reducing the risk of side effects.
  • Flaking and Scalp Irritation: Some Reddit users express concern about the flaking and scalp irritation caused by topical solutions.

Ultimately, the choice between Hims, Keeps, Happy Head or other topical Finasteride products may come down to personal preferences, pricing, and the desire for customization.

Key Ingredients and Products

Finasteride

Finasteride is an FDA-approved drug that works by reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for male pattern hair loss. Happy Head sells topical finasteride in three concentrations combined with any of its other active ingredients. They also offer finasteride 1 mg as a single-ingredient tablet or in a capsule combined with minoxidil or spironolactone plus vitamin D3.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is another clinically proven, FDA-approved hair loss treatment. Originally tested as a blood pressure medication, researchers discovered its value as a hair loss treatment when patients complained about unusual hair growth while taking it. How minoxidil works isn’t fully known, but it appears to increase blood flow and promote the growth of hair follicles during the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle.

Happy Head offers minoxidil in higher concentrations than elsewhere—6% or 8% instead of the usual 5%. All their topicals with minoxidil have hydrocortisone added to reduce irritation plus retinoic acid to help minoxidil penetrate the scalp better. Both topical and oral versions are available alone or combined with other active ingredients.

Dutasteride

Dutasteride works to block DHT in the same way as finasteride, but studies have shown it may be more effective than even the highest approved dose of finasteride. While it isn’t FDA approved to treat hair loss, doctors can prescribe it off-label for that purpose. Dutasteride is available topically combined with minoxidil and finasteride, or as a pill by itself or combined with minoxidil plus vitamin D3.

Spironolactone

Spironolactone is another blood pressure medication that also happens to block androgen hormones like testosterone thought to be responsible for pattern hair loss in women. Spironolactone is available as a topical solution combined with minoxidil, which Happy Head uses as its main formula for women under 50. It’s also available as a pill alone or combined with minoxidil and vitamin D3.

Latanoprost

A drug that mimics the activity of natural hormone-like molecules called prostaglandins. Limited evidence shows that latanoprost may be effective for increasing hair density and stimulating hair follicle growth. It’s available in a topical solution combined with finasteride and minoxidil.

Hair Supplements

Happy Head carries a dietary supplement intended to support a healthy scalp and hair. It contains biotin, collagen, keratin, saw palmetto, probiotics, ashwagandha, and vitamins A & D.

Hair Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner

Happy Head sells its own line of shampoo and conditioner that contain argan oil, biotin, collagen, keratin, and saw palmetto to promote thicker, healthier hair. They’re designed by dermatologists and sulfate/paraben-free.

How Convenient Is Happy Head?

Availability

We reached out to Happy Head customer service and confirmed that they currently ship and provide telehealth services and prescriptions in all 50 states. Shipping is free on all orders too. Happy Head products are only available through their compounding pharmacy, so for this company, you won’t be able to have your prescription filled anywhere else.

How Do I Order?

  1. Take the Questionnaire and Select a Treatment
We suggest starting with their questionnaire to avoid getting lost in all the options they offer.
  2. Hair Photos and Medical Questions
You’ll be asked to describe your hair loss history, upload pictures of your hair, and answer a flurry of questions about your health.
  3. Treatment Consultation
Happy Head products require a prescription, so once you place your order, you’ll have a telehealth consultation with a licensed dermatologist to discuss and finalize your treatment plan.
  4. Pharmacy Fill and Shipping
Your prescription will be filled and shipped from one of Happy Head’s partner pharmacies at no extra charge. You can expect orders to arrive in discreet packaging in about two business days.

How Much Does Happy Head Cost?

Expect to pay more for Happy Head hair loss treatments than you’d pay elsewhere.

Prices for topicals start with the basic men’s and women’s formulas at $79/month, go up to $120 for mixes with additional or exotic actives, and top out at $190/month for their fancy liposomal finasteride/minoxidil product.

Pricing on oral medications is where Happy Head really misses the boat.

We understand their multi-ingredient capsules are more expensive since they’re a proprietary formula.

The SuperCaps will run you $79-$89/month—pricey but still reasonable.

What’s concerning is their pricing on tablets, which are run-of-the-mill generic versions you’d get from any pharmacy.

We hopped on GoodRx.com to research what you’d pay at a retail pharmacy for the same drugs and were startled to find that you’ll pay twice as much to buy finasteride or minoxidil from Happy Head and nearly five times as much for dutasteride and spironolactone.

Generic medications are meant to save people money, so Happy Head’s steep markup on otherwise inexpensive drugs feels a bit like a money grab.

Can I Order More Than A 30-Day Supply?

Since their pharmacy compounds your order fresh every month, Happy Head topical hair loss treatments are only available as a 1-month supply.

They do offer multiple-month supplies of oral medications with the exception of their SuperCapsules, which are 1-month only. Here’s the breakdown:

Billing and Subscriptions

To make sure there’s plenty of time for them to compound and ship your medication, Happy Head will bill your credit card automatically every 25 days. You can contact customer service to delay your order or change your subscription frequency or renewal date.

Discounts and Pricing

New customers automatically get 60% off their first month on topical orders only. As you may have noticed from the pricing table, you can order multiple months at a time for some oral meds, but there’s no bulk discount. It won’t save you anything on shipping either, since shipping with Happy Head is always free for all orders.

Telehealth Costs

The first time you order from Happy Head, you’ll have a free online consultation with a licensed dermatologist in your state to discuss your eligibility and options for treatment.
The website doesn’t make it clear what kind of ongoing medical support you’ll have access to after the initial consultation. Reviews mention being able to message your doctor whenever you want, but also report long response times.

Insurance and Payments

Like most hair loss sites, Happy Head doesn’t accept insurance or health savings accounts for payment. This is because their products are considered cosmetic treatments.

Customer Service

Getting In Touch

Customer service can be reached by phone, text, or email between 9am and 5pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday. Reviews suggest the best way to reach them is by email or text—their phone system seems to get bogged down.

Refunds, Replacements, & Guarantees

Because the products Happy Head sells are medications, they can’t accept returns on products that have already shipped, even if they’re not opened. If you aren’t satisfied with your treatment within the first six months, you can request a return under their 6-month Growth Guarantee to get your money back for your most recent order (not the entire subscription).

Canceling a Subscription

Canceling your subscription with Happy Head is straightforward. All you need to do is contact customer service by phone or email and they’ll take care of the rest.

Who Is Happy Head For?

Can I use Happy Head for other kinds of hair loss, like from chemotherapy?
No, Happy Head is only for male and female pattern hair loss (also called androgenic alopecia). Their products won’t work for hair loss due to other causes, including chemotherapy or illness.

Can Women Use Happy Head?
Yes! Happy Head has several hair loss products designed for women. Since finasteride can cause serious birth defects if taken or handled by a pregnant woman, they have a formula for women under 50 years old that combines spironolactone 0.1% and minoxidil 6%. Women over 50 (post-menopausal) who can no longer become pregnant can use their standard women’s formula that contains a lower-strength combination of finasteride 0.1% and minoxidil 6%.

Does Happy Head Work?

Finasteride and minoxidil are both FDA-approved for hair loss and backed up by years of reliable clinical evidence. It’s difficult to compare finasteride vs. minoxidil because one isn’t significantly more effective than the other. That’s OK though, because research shows that combining these two drugs topically is more effective than either alone. Happy Head products with finasteride and minoxidil typically produce results in 3–6 months.
Unfortunately, Happy Head doesn’t offer any evidence to show the effectiveness of their other ingredients, most of which are being prescribed off-label without FDA approval. That’s perfectly legal, and doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t work, but a little medical proof would make it a lot easier to justify the higher prices on these formulas.

Is Happy Head Safe To Use?

Happy Head products are compounded by a licensed pharmacy and are definitely safe to use as directed for men and women. One exception: Women under 50 should never use or handle products containing finasteride or dutasteride because of the high risk of birth defects if taken while pregnant.

Finasteride carries a small risk of side effects, including sexual dysfunction and loss of libido. These are more likely to occur with oral finasteride. While they usually resolve once the medication is discontinued, switching to topical finasteride is a good option to avoid these effects.

Happy Head minoxidil side effects appear limited to occasional burning, itching, and tingling of the scalp. Many reviewers reported less irritation from Happy Head topicals compared to other treatments they’ve used (e.g., Rogaine).

Happy Head Reviews: What Customers Think

So what are the men and women using Happy Head saying about their experience?

In general, Happy Head reviews were very positive, with customers most often reporting great customer service and better and faster results than they expected.

Several reviewers shared that the best way to reach customer service is by email or text—their phone service is usually swamped.

Other reviewers said that it was hard to get in touch with their assigned doctor or get a response to their messages, something Happy Head assured the customer they were working to address.

Negative Happy Head customer reviews were mostly the usual shipping and automatic billing issues that weren’t necessarily Happy Head’s fault (forgot to cancel the subscription in time, didn’t read the subscription terms).

Excellent Customer Service Review

Rating 5/5: I’m probably one of the few who have dealt with Happy Head’s customer service more than once. However, I had a good experience every time. It was a shame to see less-than-perfect ratings, but it makes sense that the typical negative review bias hits even harder when patients – especially ones who are successfully treated – want to keep quiet about using a product like this. Objectively, though, the product is an excellent blend, competitively priced, and supported by attentive and responsive staff.
