Often left to professionals, toilet installation can be an exacting process. However, avid DIYers can certainly complete the task without much trouble. Here are the basic steps. The project will take between less than an hour and about two hours.

1. Remove the Old Toilet

Turn the water off at the wall valve behind the toilet or at the main water shut-off in the house. Flush and drain the water from the bowl and tank. Remove the water supply line from the tank, using a small bucket underneath to catch the remaining tank water. Remove the bolts holding the bowl to the floor and lift the toilet up and away. Clean up wax ring residue from the toilet flange in the floor.

2. Install the Toilet Bowl

Turn the new toilet bowl on its side carefully and press a new wax ring into place around the discharge hole. Next, place the bowl on the floor flange by carefully centering it over the bolts and gently lowering it into place. Press down firmly and evenly to seat the toilet. Avoid moving, shifting, or twisting the fixture once it’s seated.

3. Install the Nuts

Twist the retention nuts onto the bolts sticking up from the flange and through the base of the bowl. Once hand tight, use a wrench to snug the bolts, being careful not to overtighten and damage the chinaware. Cut the excess bolt length off with a hacksaw if necessary. Install the bolt-hole covers after tightening the nuts for a skirted toilet.

4. Install the Tank

For two-piece toilets, place the tank gasket around the tank discharge hole and insert the tank bolts through the corresponding holes in the tank’s bottom side. Set the tank on the bowl so the bolts protrude through the mounting holes. Twist the securing nuts onto the bolts by hand and with a wrench until the tank is firmly seated onto the bowl—Avoid overtightening.

5. Install the Flush Mechanism

If your new toilet doesn’t come assembled with the new flush mechanism in the tank, follow the manufacturer’s directions to install the kit.

6. Install the Seat

Use the mounting kit and bolts for your toilet seat to install it. Place the bolts through the appropriate holes in the seat and bowl top. Secure it by twisting on the retaining nuts by hand until firmly seated.

7. Attach the Water Supply

Attach the water supply line at the house water valve and at the toilet tank by twisting the fittings in both locations. Use a wrench on the valve side and on the tank side if necessary.

8. Adjust Water Level

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to adjust the water level to match the fill mark inside the toilet tank.

American Standard Toilet Maintenance

When a toilet is leaking or isn’t functioning correctly, calling a plumber to identify and fix the problem is typically the best course of action. However, there are several maintenance tasks a DIYer can accomplish on their own to avoid the plumber’s invoice.

1. How to remove an American Standard toilet seat

A pair of plastic or metal bolts and nuts hold the toilet seat in place on typical toilet seats. To remove the seat, simply twist the nuts from the bolts and lift the seat from the bowl. For other toilet seat connection types, you may have to twist the fastener under the plastic cover on the bowl’s top side to remove it. Still, others may simply require you to push a button or lever to release the lid from the bowl.

2. How to tighten the toilet seat on American Standard toilets

To tighten most toilet seats, simply tighten the securing nuts onto the toilet seat bolts by twisting them clockwise until they’re snug—Using pliers can often help with reach and grip.

3. How to replace an American Standard toilet flapper

Several styles of flappers exist. However, replacing one if it’s leaking is straightforward for most of them. For most American Standard toilet flappers, start by turning off the water supply and flushing the toilet. To remove the old one, detach the chain from the flapper and the flush handle or trip lever. Remove the flapper by twisting each side of its attachment point away and off of the overflow tube.

Install the new flapper by reversing the steps to remove the old one. Adjust the chain length slightly by placing the hooks in different chain loops if necessary.

4. How to tighten or replace the flush handle or trip lever on an American Standard toilet

To tighten a standard flush handle or trip lever on a toilet, you can simply use an adjustable wrench to tighten the handle connection nut. Lift the tank lid off and locate the trip lever from inside. Tighten the nut by twisting it counterclockwise.

Most flush handles are reverse-threaded, meaning they tighten counterclockwise and loosen clockwise. To replace the handle, turn the nut clockwise to remove it and slide the handle out of the tank after unclipping the flapper chain. Instal the new one in reverse order of removal.
