Spot Pet Insurance Review: Policy Options

A deductible is the amount of covered expenses you must pay each year before Spot begins reimbursement. Higher deductible plans are more affordable, but lower deductible plans will save you more money on vet bills in the future.

Annual coverage is the amount of reimbursement you can receive in a year. After you receive reimbursements totaling the cap amount, you’ll be responsible for all vet bills. Spot is one of only a few pet insurance carriers that offers an unlimited annual limit option.

The reimbursement percentage is the amount of the covered expense that you’ll receive back after your pet sees the vet. Choosing a higher reimbursement percentage increases the money Spot will return to you after a vet visit. Decreasing the reimbursement percentage will lower your monthly premium.

Here’s an example of how this works.

Spot Policy Comparison
You’ve chosen a policy with a $100 deductible, unlimited annual coverage, and a 100% reimbursement rate. You haven’t used your Spot pet insurance yet this year, and you’re outside of your waiting period. You’ve chosen a policy with a $500 deductible, a $2,500 annual coverage limit, and a 70% reimbursement rate. If $1,000 of the bill falls under covered expenses, you’ll receive back $900. This is 100% of the covered amount minus your $100 deductible. If $1,000 of the bill falls under covered expenses, you’ll receive back $350. This is 70% of the bill minus your $500 deductible.
You’ll receive reimbursement for 100% of covered expenses for the rest of the year.  You can now receive 70% reimbursement on the rest of your covered vet expenses for the remainder of the year, up to $2,150.

How much does Spot Pet Insurance cost?

Spot pet insurance’s customizable plans start at just $9/month for cats and kittens or $15/month for dogs and puppies. The plan costs are variable depending on which policy you choose and how much coverage you request.

Is my pet too old for a Spot Pet Insurance policy?

Spot pet insurance does not enforce an upper age limit, meaning you can purchase a policy for your pet from 8 weeks old and well into old age. Spot recommends purchasing your policy as early as possible to avoid missing out on coverage due to pre-existing conditions.

Spot Pet Insurance Waiting Period Information

Spot pet insurance enforces a straightforward 14-day waiting period. This aligns with most other pet insurance companies but without the hassle of multiple waiting periods for different conditions. You’ll simply purchase your policy and be able to utilize the service after just 14 days.

Please remember that any illness or injury that occurs before the conclusion of the waiting period will not be covered.

Spot Pet Insurance Reviews

Spot Pet Insurance has a Trustpilot score of 4.7/5, and 82% of its reviews give it five stars.

Many reviewers praised Spot’s swift turnaround time on reimbursements, with some stating they received their money in less than a week. Multiple consumers were pleased they received more back than expected on expensive vet bills. One particular consumer praised Spot’s performance after a terrible illness struck her pet. Spot covered the pet’s care as promised. Unfortunately, the pet eventually needed to be euthanized. When this happened, Spot proactively ended the policy and refunded the pet parent a portion of their balance. They also sent kind notes offering condolences on the loss of the pet.

Negative reviews focused heavily on coverage concerns. Some consumers were frustrated that Spot only covered one round of vaccinations for their puppy, requiring several rounds. Others didn’t appreciate that itemized veterinarian bills left them to pay for portions they didn’t expect. A representative from Spot appears to reach out to each pet parent with concerns and attempts to reconcile the issue.

Spot Pet Insurance Vs. Embrace

Spot Pet Insurance and Embrace Pet Insurance both landed on our list of the best pet insurance in California. Both companies offer reimbursement-style policies and unlimited annual coverage maximums. They’re also similar in their deductible and reimbursement choices.

Spot stands out above Embrace with its 100% reimbursement option. They also have a straightforward 14-day waiting period, whereas Embrace’s waiting period is 16 days for illness coverage and six months for orthopedic coverage.

However, veterans may appreciate Embrace’s veteran discount, which can be used in addition to the multi-pet discount for significant savings.
