About SimpliSafe

SimpliSafe is one of the best-known home security companies around, thanks in part to its extensive marketing campaigns and almost two decades in business. The company has grown, and today it employs more than 800 people and services hundreds of thousands of customers across the company. In recent years, Simplisafe has introduced several new features intended to protect its customers from hackers and attacks and launched a smart lock feature in 2019.

Though based in Boston, SimpliSafe has a call center in Richmond, VA, where agents monitor customer systems 24/7 and can dispatch emergency personnel or contact the customer to resolve issues. That said, its Better Business Bureau customer reviews raise some questions, and it has accumulated a significant 487 complaints in the last three years, with 183 in the previous 12 months alone.

Key Features of a SimpliSafe Home Security System

SimpliSafe is regarded as one of the top home security providers, offering products and services that cover a wide range of home sizes and budgets. It’s also flexible with monitoring and coverage options, allowing customers to choose self-monitoring or a professional option. These are some of the key features of a SimpliSafe home security system:

• Robust app functionality with integrations for Alexa and Google Assistant
• Self-monitoring is available
• SimpliSafe does not require a contract
• Connections can use Wi-Fi or cellular
• Budget systems are available with the ability to add more features later

SimpliSafe also works with Affirm and other top-rated lenders to offer monthly financing of its systems, and the company offers packages for as little as $200.

SimpliSafe Outdoor Camera Reviews

Considering an outdoor security camera? SimpliSafe’s outdoor camera has a 4-star rating (based on 55 reviews as of 2024) and packs a punch for its $356.99 price tag (via Best Buy).

Here’s the lowdown:

Pros:

  • Easy, DIY installation: Plug-and-play setup makes SimpliSafe’s camera ideal for tech novices.
  • Versatile: Use it indoors or outdoors for added security flexibility.
  • Smart home compatibility: Works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control.
  • Cost-effective: Competitive price compared to similar feature-rich cameras.
  • Guest-friendly key: Handy feature for temporary access control.

Cons:

  • Short battery life: Frequent recharges might be needed, depending on usage.
  • Alarm/motion/app glitches: Some user reviews mention inconsistencies in these areas.
  • Weak signal strength: Potential connectivity issues in certain locations.
  • Recording delay: Motion detection might not trigger immediate recording due to bandwidth limitations.

Warranty: Only one year for parts and labor, which falls short of some competitors’ offerings.

Overall: SimpliSafe’s Outdoor Camera offers convenience, smart home integration, and a competitive price. However, battery life, potential connectivity issues, and reported glitches with core functionalities (alarm, motion detection, app) are drawbacks to consider. Weigh these pros and cons against your priorities to determine if this camera fits your needs.

Additional Points to Consider:

  • Night vision capabilities
  • Field of view and video resolution
  • Cloud storage options and fees
  • Professional monitoring availability and cost

Review of SimpliSafe Sensors

SimpliSafe offers a range of sensors for doors, windows, and glass breaking. While its hardware isn’t anything to get excited about, SimpliSafe’s sensors are small and handsome, making them more agreeable with most home décor. Though the sensors and system are generally considered easy to install, and SimpliSafe says 97 percent of new customers opt for a DIY setup, the company offers pro installation for $125.

All of SimpliSafe’s sensors work through the base station using a Wi-Fi connection. The base has battery backup and can connect to SimpliSafe’s monitoring service even when the power or internet is out. Users have three modes: away, home, and off. The system gives a 30-second buffer upon entry before sounding an alarm, and the time can be customized in the SimpliSafe app. The $30 interactive plan adds the ability to arm and disarm the system from the app.

Review SimpliSafe Motion Sensors

I have several pets, so a chief concern was whether the interior sensors would be constantly triggered. That turned out to be a non-issue, as the sensors had no trouble sorting between people and four-legged people. The good news is that the sensors have a solid range of 30 feet, which is perfect for my smallish 240-year-old house, but the downside is that the sensors’ 90-degree field of view can make them hard to position. That’s especially true in older, more closed-off homes built before people had heard the term “open concept.”

Review SimpliSafe Entry Sensors

SimpliSafe’s door and window entry sensors work well, easily detecting when a door or window is opened. Their small size makes them inconspicuous, and they won’t interfere with home décor. The sensors allow a two-inch opening before alerting, which may not be ideal for pet owners, but the space is small enough to prevent human entry. SimpliSafe also offers the sensors at a low price, making it affordable to equip several doors and windows.

Review SimpliSafe Glass Break Sensors

SimpliSafe’s glass break sensors are great for people with ground-floor doors and windows that could be vulnerable to entry. They are installed near the glass, and their microphones pick up the sound of glass breaking. The sensors are sensitive enough to pick up glass-breaking sounds from across a room, so one unit can cover a room in some cases.

Review SimpliSafe Indoor Cameras

There are two interior camera choices with SimpliSafe security systems. The Smart Alarm system is bulky and not that attractive, but it offers a siren and built-in human detection to separate people and animals. The SimpliCam system features smaller cameras and self-monitoring and is generally much less expensive.

Review on the Cost for SimpliSafe Products

SimpliSafe makes it easy to get started online, allowing customers to build a system with a la carte options and detailed monthly costs for each. Buyers can opt for professional or DIY installation, and the company’s high degree of transparency makes the purchase and startup process much less stressful. Professional monitoring is $30 per month with the interactive plan. The upgrade also brings a cellular backup feature, texts, and more. The self-monitoring option is $10 a month and comes with unlimited storage.

Product Price
Entry/Motion/Glass Sensors Between $0.62 and $1.67/mo
Outdoor/Smart Alarm/SimpliCam Between $4.13 and $7.92/mo
Water/smoke/CO detection Between $0.83 and $2.50/mo
Add-Ons (Panic buttons, etc.) Between $0.17 and $7.04/mo

Review SimpliSafe’s 11-piece Security System

This DIY home security system costs $399.90, making it one of the more affordable systems on the market. This deal includes one free wired indoor camera, a base station, a keypad, and four motion sensors.

What are customer reviews saying about this product?

Positives:

  • It works great
  • easy to install
  • affordable to purchase (often customers pay $25 per month in installments)

Negatives:

  • 1 hour wait to speak with customer service
  • Several false alarms
  • Issues with the base station being out of range
  • SimpliSafe cameras make loud noises when activated

SimpliSafe Customer Service Reviews

Negative reviews on SimpliSafe:

SimpliSafe has more than 1.5 million customers and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

That said, its customer service reviews are all over the map, with some reporting difficulties receiving responses for billing, monitoring, and other related issues.

Positive reviews on SimpliSafe:

SimpliSafe shines in customer support, offering multiple channels to get help with installation or troubleshooting. Customers can easily chat live with knowledgeable representatives on the SimpliSafe website or reach them by phone. For self-starters, SimpliSafe’s website also boasts a wealth of free resources, including detailed guides and manuals.

SimpliSafe’s customer support team works daily from 9 AM until 12 AM EST. Many people report same-day responses from support emails, and wait times for phone support are generally acceptable. SimpliSafe isn’t the best-rated home security system, but it’s a reputable company and a top choice for consumers to consider.

SimpliSafe Google Reviews and Standout Products:

On Google, SimpliSafe has over 2,000 customer reviews with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, which is excellent. A standout product is SimpliSafe’s DIY Home Security System, which costs $483.92.

Alternatives: ADT vs. SimpliSafe

ADT is one of the largest and most well-known home security companies around, making it one of SimpliSafe’s most significant competitors. The company offers a much wider array of products and has more options for professional monitoring. It’s also generally well-reviewed for its installation and support services, and its monitoring service is one of the best in the business.

That said, ADT is more expensive than SimpliSafe and is more complicated to sign up for and get started. It’s much easier to choose a SimpliSafe plan online, and order equipment and the self-installation option is a big value for many customers. That makes ADT a better choice for more complicated home situations, while SimpliSafe is more suited to straightforward installations.

Vivint vs. SimpliSafe

Vivint offers a wide range of products, including consultation services and professional installation. Its Smart Hub system brings centralized control, and the app is one of the most functional in the business. Users report great customer service, and Vivint’s customizable packages can make it a great value for some homeowners. There’s also 24/7 live monitoring and a long list of customization options.

Like ADT, Vivint is more expensive than SimpliSafe, and the live monitoring costs add up over time. It doesn’t offer a DIY option, requiring professional installation – though it occasionally offers free installation promotions. Another alternative to home security systems for seniors is a medical alert system. Companies like MobileHelp offer home security features inside their medical alert systems, including notifying emergency responders when doors are opened at unusual night hours. Here is the list of the top 10 best medical alert systems for seniors.

  • Mixed customer service reviews: While many are positive, some report difficulties with billing and monitoring issues.
  • Occasional sensor false alarms: Can be frustrating and inconvenient, especially with self-monitoring.
