Lemonade Pet Insurance: Editorial Rating
Trusted Company Reviews Rating Score for Lemonade: 9.6
Our rigorous rating system gave lemonade pet insurance a 9.6/10 rating. The company earned high points for its wide range of deductible and reimbursement options and extensive policy add-ons, such as preventative care packages, visit fees, physical therapy, dental, behavioral, and end-of-life care. Their waiting periods are variable, with some coverage beginning after just two days of purchase.
Our Lemonade pet insurance review found that Lemonade is transparent about its costs. While its coverage options aren’t the highest on the market, capping out at 90% reimbursement, its policies are quite affordable. Discounts are available for policies covering multiple pets and when bundling with other types of insurance.
We also love Lemonade’s charitable giving plug-in, the Lemonade Giveback Program, which allows policyholders to choose a nonprofit to receive donations at the end of the year.
Lemonade did lose some points in our system. They don’t offer a direct-pay policy, meaning you’ll need to pay for your pet’s care at the time of service and submit a claim for reimbursement. Furthermore, their annual coverage maximum is $100,000, leaving you responsible for any care costs that exceed that amount. While the range of reimbursement options does allow you to customize your cost, the highest available is 90%. This means you must cover a minimum of 10% of bills after your deductible.

About Lemonade Pet Insurance
In addition to Lemonade’s standard coverage, pet parents can opt for add-ons to ensure coverage for their pet’s specific needs. The basic policy will cover diagnostics, necessary procedures, medications, accident care, and illness care. However, add-ons provide coverage for an even more comprehensive range of care. Each add-on will increase the cost of the policy and be subject to its own terms and conditions, such as co-insurance and deductibles. You have the option to choose from add-ons that cover:
- Vet visit fees
- Annual wellness exams
- Vaccinations
- Dental cleanings
- Spaying and neutering
- Physical therapy
- Acupuncture
- Hydrotherapy
- Dental surgeries
- Gum disease treatment
- Behavioral therapy
- Medication for behaviors
- Specialized training sessions
- Euthanasia
- Cremations
- Commemorative items
Most pet insurance policies start with a waiting period that can range from 0 days to 6 months before submitting your initial claim. Lemonade’s waiting period is variable. Accident coverage begins almost immediately, at two days after policy purchase. Your pet’s coverage for illness begins 14 days after purchase. Orthopedic coverage starts after 30 days, and cruciate ligament events (knee injuries) are covered six months after policy purchase.
Your Lemonade pet insurance policy will reimburse you directly for the costs associated with your pet’s healthcare. If your pet requires care, you can take them to your vet of choice with no need to find a veterinarian that “accepts” your policy. After your pet receives care, you pay the vet directly and submit the required paperwork (including a paid invoice) to the insurance company. They’ll process your request and send the covered amount directly to you. The downfall to this system is that you still need to pay the vet bills ahead of time, be sure to file the appropriate paperwork, and then wait for reimbursement. Lemonade requires that you file the claim within 180 days of treatment (Texans must do so within 90 days) and include a short video explaining what happened to your pet. The turnaround time may vary from hours to days or even weeks.
What does Lemonade Pet Insurance cover?
Lemonade’s standard pet health insurance plan covers medical care for basic accidents and illnesses. After the waiting period, they will cover costs that exceed your deductible up to your chosen reimbursement rate until you meet the maximum annual coverage cap. Basic coverage includes (with limitations):
- Diagnostics
- Procedures
- Medications
- Hospitalizations
- Illness care
- Chronic condition care
- Infestations
- Infections
Additional coverage options are available through add-ons as listed above.
What is NOT covered under a Lemonade Pet Insurance policy?
Like other pet insurance policies, exclusions apply to Lemonade’s pet insurance policy. Pre-existing conditions, any condition that your pet had shown signs of or been diagnosed with prior to the conclusion of the waiting period, are considered pre-existing. This means that if you purchase your policy after your pet develops a limp and then take them to the vet after the waiting period, your reimbursement will be denied.
While not common, pet parents who fail to provide a safe environment and reasonable care may have their claims denied due to neglect.
A basic policy does not cover anything listed as an add-on. This includes preventative care, physical therapy, behavioral care, and end-of-life care. Even after the purchase of add-ons, the following exclusions apply:
- Vet visit fees for pre-existing conditions
- Preventative physical therapy
- Puppy training
- Routine dental cleaning
- Tartar and plaque
- Funerals
- Burial expenses
How much does Lemonade pet insurance cost?
Each Lemonade pet insurance policy is tailored to your needs. Therefore, the cost of your policy will depend heavily upon your coverage choices. Most pet parents will find they can purchase a basic plan for less than $100/month, with some finding coverage for as low as $10/month. Add-ons range in price from under $2.00/month to over $30.00/month.
For example, standard policy coverage for a relatively healthy 4-year-old mixed breed dog in Pennsylvania with no chronic conditions costs as low as $21.68/month or $224.30/year (saving you an additional $35.81 annually). This includes no add-ons, a $750 deductible, 70% reimbursement, and a $5,000 annual maximum.
However, the same pup could have the basic coverage as well as all add-on options with a $100 deductible, 90% reimbursement rate, and $100,000 annual maximum coverage limit for $151.31/monthly or $1,721.66/year (annual pay savings of $94.20). This includes the following add-ons:
- Vet visit fees: $16.17/month
- Physical therapy: $5.92/month
- Behavioral conditions: $1.82/month
- Dental illness: $12.62/month
- End-of-life care: $3.75/month
- Preventative care: $32.31/month
How to file a claim through Lemonade
Filing a claim through Lemonade isn’t difficult, but it’s important to know the necessary steps that you’ll need to take.
- Purchase a policy through Lemonade and wait for the appropriate timeframe before attempting to file a claim.
- Be sure to submit all required paperwork to Lemonade when purchasing your policy. They require that a veterinarian has seen your pet within the previous 12 months and will need medical records to prove this.
- Take your pet to your preferred licensed veterinarian when they need care.
- Pay for your pet’s medical care at the time of service. You’ll make this payment directly to your vet or their office.
- Download the Lemonade app and choose “File a claim.”
- Lemonade’s AI program will guide you through the claim process by asking questions about your pet’s treatment.
The app will prompt you to record and submit a short video explaining your pet’s health needs, visit, and outcome. - Upload a copy of your invoice, receipt of payment, and records from the visit.
The Lemonade team will review the claim and reimburse you the amount they determine is covered under your policy.
What Does Lemonade Pet Insurance Cover?
Lemonade pet health insurance covers a wide variety of medical needs for your pet, depending on your chosen plan. The basic plan offers enough coverage to assist during times of accident or illness. However, if you’re looking for a more comprehensive plan that ensures coverage for most of your pet’s health needs, the add-ons are excellent.

- Maximum annual coverage options: $5,000-$100,000

Lemonade Pet Insurance Reviews

Some displeased customers felt that cancellation processes were challenging. If you choose to end your policy, you must confirm with customer service that they have canceled your policy and contact Lemonade if they continue to charge you.
Lemonade Pet Insurance Vs. Careplus by Chewy
Our Lemondate pet insurance review wouldn’t be complete without some comparison. On our list of the Best Pet Insurance Companies in California, Careplus by Chewy and Lemonade stood out. What makes the comparison interesting is that Careplus by Chewy offers policies from two providers, one of which is Lemonade.
Careplus by Chewy differs in its offering of options for direct pay, meaning that you won’t have to submit a claim for reimbursement. Instead, the insurance company reimburses the veterinarian directly, saving you some money upfront. You’ll still be responsible for your portion of the bill, including deductibles and co-insurance (the amount not covered according to your reimbursement level).
Lemonade, however, offers lower deductibles, annual coverage, and reimbursement levels, which is beneficial for pet parents on a budget.
